Proposal Photographer in Rome: A Surprise, Perfectly Hidden

One question, one city, and no second take

A proposal happens once, and it lasts about ten seconds. As a proposal photographer in Rome, our job is to be there for those ten seconds without anyone noticing us, and then to give you an hour of beautiful portraits as a newly engaged couple. Most proposal photographers in Rome are booked through travel marketplaces that send whoever is free that day. We are based in Rome, we photograph luxury weddings across Italy, and a part of our team is dedicated to proposals: photographers who know the city at every hour and are used to hiding in plain sight. We plan a proposal the way we plan a wedding: around the place, the hour and the light.

How a surprise proposal works with us

  • A first call. You tell us about your partner, your trip and the kind of moment you imagine: grand and cinematic, or quiet and private.
  • The place and the hour. We suggest two or three places that suit your story and the season, at the hour when they're quiet and the light is kind.
  • The plan. We scout the spot, send you a photo of where to stand, and agree a signal and a backup time. You'll recognize us; your partner won't.
  • The moment. We're already there, looking like any other photographer in Rome, with a long lens and a second angle when it helps.
  • After the yes. We introduce ourselves, hug the two of you, and take you for portraits around the area while the excitement is still on your faces.
  • Your gallery. A private gallery of the moment and the portraits, selected and edited with the same care as our weddings.

The Proposal Package

For proposals in Rome we offer a simple, accessible package, designed only for this moment and separate from our wedding collections. It's looked after by the part of our team dedicated to proposals, and it includes everything you need for the surprise and the photographs afterwards.

  • A planning call to choose the place, the hour and your cover story.
  • Scouting of the spot, with a photo of exactly where to stand and an agreed signal.
  • A hidden photographer for the moment itself, and about an hour of portraits of the two of you afterwards.
  • A backup hour or day if it rains.
  • Your photographs in a private online gallery, selected and edited with care.
  • On request: a short proposal film, a second photographer for family hiding nearby, or help with flowers, a musician and a dinner reservation.

Write to us with your date and your idea, and we'll send you the rate and our availability: ask about the Proposal Package.

Where to propose in Rome, by the hour

  • The Orange Garden on the Aventine, at sunset, with the dome of St. Peter's across the rooftops. It opens at 7 a.m., so in winter it works at sunrise too.
  • The Pincio terrace, above Piazza del Popolo, at sunset: the classic view over the domes, best on a weekday.
  • Ponte Sant'Angelo, at sunrise or blue hour, with Bernini's angels and Castel Sant'Angelo, and St. Peter's beyond.
  • The Trevi Fountain, before 7 a.m. The basin has a ticket from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; at dawn it's free and almost empty.
  • The top of the Spanish Steps, by Trinità dei Monti, early in the morning, with azaleas on the steps in spring.
  • Villa Borghese, by the little temple on the lake, on a weekday morning, for a green, romantic Rome.

A truly private moment

The famous sights are beautiful, but they are never empty. If your partner is shy, or you'd like to kneel without an audience, choose a private setting: the terrace of a hotel suite above the rooftops, a rooftop reserved for an hour at sunset, a villa garden on one of Rome's hills, a candlelit table in a private room. We can suggest places and help coordinate with the hotel or a planner, flowers, a musician or champagne, so everything is ready when you arrive.

Photographs, and a film if you like

We are a photography and film studio, so we can also film the moment: the walk, the kneel, the reaction, and the embrace, cut with music into a short film you'll watch again for years. In a private setting, we can record the words too. Photography always comes first; the film is there for couples who want to hear and see it again.

The rules in Rome

  • The Trevi Fountain basin has a ticket from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and entering the water is forbidden.
  • Sitting on the Spanish Steps isn't allowed; standing for a proposal is fine.
  • The Pantheon has an entry ticket for the interior; the portico and the square are free.
  • Setting up flowers, candles, musicians or signs in a public square needs a permit, so a dramatic set-up belongs on private ground.
  • Drones can't fly over the historic center.

A rain plan

Rome rarely rains for long, but plan for it. Bernini's colonnade at St. Peter's and the portico of the Pantheon are covered and beautiful; a hotel terrace with a canopy or a private room works perfectly; and we always agree a backup hour or day. Soft, cloudy light is lovely for portraits, so a grey morning isn't a disaster.

What to wear, and the ring

  • Something you both love and feel like yourselves in, with colors that sit well with Rome's ochre and travertine: cream, navy, soft blue, sage, black.
  • Shoes for cobblestones: there will be walking during the portraits.
  • Keep the ring box in an inside pocket, and carry it in your hand luggage on the flight. Ring boxes make a visible square in tight trousers.
  • Give your partner a reason to dress up: a dinner reservation, a 'vacation photo session', a friend's suggestion.

Questions couples ask us

How far ahead should we book a proposal photographer in Rome?

A few weeks is usually enough, more in spring, around Christmas and in September. Write to us as soon as you know your dates.

What if my partner suspects something?

Many people book a 'travel photo session' as a cover: your partner knows about the photos, not the question. We'll play along until the moment.

Can our families be there?

Yes. We can hide them nearby and bring them in after the yes, which makes some of the most emotional photographs of all.

Can you help us plan the dinner afterwards?

We're happy to suggest places and coordinate timing, so you walk from the portraits straight into a candlelit dinner.
