There is no more romantic setting for an elopement than Rome. Ancient piazzas at dawn, hidden gardens, terraces overlooking the domes: the city itself becomes the witness of your promise. Cinemotions Films is an award-winning elopement photographer and videographer based in Rome, creating intimate, cinematic images for couples who wish to celebrate their love in the simplest and most meaningful way.

Whether you are traveling to Rome for your elopement or you live in the city and dream of an intimate celebration, we take care of the creative side of your day with the same attention we dedicate to our largest weddings.

Step by step

How to elope in Rome: a step-by-step guide

Eloping in Rome is simpler than many couples imagine. With a little planning, you can say your vows in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, just the two of you or with a few loved ones. Here is how we guide our couples, step by step.

1. Choose between a legal and a symbolic ceremony

Many couples complete the legal formalities at home and celebrate a symbolic ceremony in Rome: it is the simplest option, with complete freedom of time and place. Others wish to marry legally in Italy, with a civil ceremony in Rome or a religious ceremony in one of its churches.

2. Prepare your documents early

For a legal civil wedding, foreign couples need a declaration that they are free to marry, known in Italy as the Nulla Osta, issued through their own embassy or consulate, together with valid passports and, where required, apostilled and translated documents. American couples, for example, usually sign an Atto Notorio at an Italian consulate before leaving and then the Nulla Osta at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. Requirements change over time, so always confirm them with your consulate and the City of Rome; a wedding planner can take care of the whole process for you.

3. Book your ceremony

Civil ceremonies in Rome are celebrated in historic municipal halls, including the famous Sala Rossa at the Campidoglio on Michelangelo's piazza. You will need two witnesses and, if you do not speak Italian, an interpreter. A symbolic ceremony can instead take place almost anywhere: a garden, a terrace, a private villa.

4. Choose the right time and place

Spring and autumn offer the softest light and the mildest weather. For iconic places such as the Trevi Fountain or the Spanish Steps, sunrise is the secret: the city is still asleep and the light is golden. Archaeological areas such as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum require specific authorization for professional photography, and drones cannot be flown over the historic center without special permits, so we plan every location with you in advance.

5. Plan a day that feels like you

Hair and makeup, flowers, a private dinner in a Roman trattoria or on a rooftop terrace: an elopement can be as simple or as refined as you wish. We are happy to recommend trusted professionals and to shape the timeline around the best light of the day.

Intimate weddings

Intimate weddings and micro weddings in Rome

Some of the most moving weddings we have documented were shared with only a few guests. An intimate wedding in Rome can be a ceremony in a historic church or at the Campidoglio, followed by a private dinner in a Roman palazzo, a trattoria in Trastevere or a rooftop terrace at sunset. We document every moment with discretion, so that you and your loved ones can be fully present.

Vow renewals, anniversaries and proposals

We also photograph vow renewals, anniversaries and surprise proposals in Rome, for couples who wish to celebrate a new chapter of their story in the Eternal City.

Where to elope

Where to elope in Rome

Rome offers endless backdrops for an elopement. Among the settings our couples love most:

  • The Campidoglio and Michelangelo's piazza, where civil ceremonies take place
  • The Pincio terrace and the gardens of Villa Borghese
  • The Giardino degli Aranci on the Aventine Hill
  • The Gianicolo, for golden-hour portraits above the rooftops
  • Historic piazzas and fountains at sunrise, before the city wakes up
  • Private villas, palazzi and rooftop terraces for an intimate reception
  • The castles and lakes around Rome, such as Castello Odescalchi in Bracciano

Some locations require permits for photography or for the ceremony itself. Together with your planner, we will gladly advise you on the best options and timing.

Above all, we bring to an intimate celebration the same care we give to every story we tell.

Local knowledge

What we have learned eloping in Rome

Rome is our home, so we know its rules as well as its light. A few things we plan around at every elopement.

  • Sunrise is gold. The Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona are almost empty at dawn: around 5:30 a.m. in June, 7:30 in December. The ticket for the Trevi basin applies only from 9 a.m.
  • The small rules. Sitting on the Spanish Steps is not allowed, and drones cannot fly over the historic center. We know where you can stand, sit and kiss without a fine.
  • Where to say yes. A symbolic ceremony with chairs and a celebrant in a public square needs a permit. A private terrace, a villa garden or a rooftop is simpler and often more beautiful.
  • A legal ceremony. Civil weddings take place on the Capitoline Hill, in the halls of the Campidoglio around Michelangelo’s square, with documents prepared in advance.
  • Every season works. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots; summer means sunrise and sunset sessions with a long rest in between; winter brings low golden light and Christmas lights in December.

Questions

Elopement in Rome: frequently asked questions

A few answers to the questions couples ask us most often.

How do we elope in Rome?

Decide whether you wish a legal or a symbolic ceremony, prepare your documents early if you marry legally, book your ceremony venue, and choose the time and places for your photographs. We guide you through every step, and we can recommend trusted planners and professionals.

Can we have a legal civil ceremony in Rome?

Yes. Civil ceremonies in Rome are celebrated in historic municipal halls, including the Sala Rossa at the Campidoglio. Foreign couples need documents from their own country, such as the Nulla Osta, two witnesses and an interpreter if they do not speak Italian. Always confirm the current requirements with your consulate and the City of Rome.

What documents do American couples need to marry in Rome?

Usually a valid passport, a birth certificate with apostille where required, an Atto Notorio signed at an Italian consulate in the United States, and the Nulla Osta signed at the U.S. Embassy in Rome and then legalized. Requirements can change, so check them with the Italian consulate and the U.S. Embassy before you travel.

Is a symbolic ceremony a good option?

For many couples it is the ideal choice: you complete the legal formalities at home and celebrate in Rome with total freedom of place and time, in a garden, on a terrace or in a private villa.

Do we need a permit to take photos at the Colosseum or the Trevi Fountain?

Discreet portraits in public piazzas and streets are generally possible, while archaeological areas such as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum require specific authorization for professional photography. We plan every location with you in advance, and suggest sunrise for iconic places like the Trevi Fountain.

Can you film our elopement with a drone in Rome?

Drones cannot be flown over the historic center of Rome without special authorization. We plan aerial footage only where it is permitted, for example in the countryside or at lakeside venues around Rome.

What is the best time of year to elope in Rome?

Spring and autumn, from April to June and from September to early November, offer soft light and mild weather. Winter has its own quiet magic, with fewer visitors and beautiful low light.

Can we elope in Rome as a couple from abroad?

Yes. Many couples from abroad choose to elope in Rome, with a legally binding civil or religious ceremony or with a symbolic one. Legal requirements depend on your nationality, so we suggest checking them early with your consulate or your wedding planner; we will gladly recommend trusted professionals.

How long does elopement photography in Rome last?

Every elopement is different. Coverage can range from a few hours, for the ceremony and portraits around the city, to a full day that includes getting ready and a private dinner. We tailor it to your plans.

Do you also photograph intimate weddings for couples who live in Rome?

Of course. We work with couples who live in Rome as well as with couples traveling from abroad: civil ceremonies at the Campidoglio, church weddings, small receptions and anniversary celebrations.

Do you offer both photography and video for elopements?

Yes. You can choose photography, a cinematic film or both. One team for photo and video keeps the day relaxed and the style consistent.

Can you suggest the most beautiful places for elopement photos in Rome?

Yes. Depending on the season, the time of day and your style, we suggest the most beautiful settings, from quiet gardens and panoramic terraces to historic piazzas at sunrise.

Do you accept last-minute elopements?

Yes. Many elopements are decided spontaneously, and whenever our calendar allows we are happy to welcome last-minute requests. Simply share your date and we will reply promptly.
