In our last article I wrote about what a destination wedding weekend on Lake Como feels like, through Renee & Tino's wedding at Villa Erba. This one is the practical side: how to organize it, the real Lake Como wedding cost, and the villas couples ask me about most.
Start with the guest list, then the season
Before you fall in love with a villa, decide roughly how many people you'll invite. On Lake Como the number of guests decides almost everything else: which villas can host you, whether you'll need a marquee, how many boats and shuttles to book. Then choose the season. Early to mid June and the first half of September are the favorites. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, while May and October are quieter and greener, but the weather is harder to predict.

A realistic planning timeline
- 14 to 20 months before. Choose your planner and secure the venue. The best villas go first, especially on Saturdays in June and September.
- About 12 months before. Book your photographer and videographer, then flowers and music. Block hotel rooms for your guests near the venue.
- 6 to 9 months before. Design, menus, boats and transfers. Decide whether your ceremony will be legal or symbolic.
- 3 months before. Get the rain plan confirmed in writing, request drone authorizations and build the timeline around the sunset.
- The last month. Final numbers and seating. If you can, visit the villa at the same hour as your ceremony, so you see the light you'll have.
Legal or symbolic?
A legal wedding in Italy goes through the civil process of the town where you marry, with documents from your home country, translations and apostilles. It's perfectly doable, but allow a few months and some patience. That's why so many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the lake. It needs no Italian paperwork and gives you complete freedom on the time and the place.
What a wedding on Lake Como costs
It's the question everyone asks and nobody likes to answer. These are the ranges published by planners and venues for 2026, VAT included. Take them as a starting point, not a quote: the date, the guest count and the villa can move them a lot.
- The overall budget. A full wedding weekend on the lake usually falls somewhere between €60,000 and €250,000, and goes higher at the most exclusive venues.
- Per guest. For luxury weddings of 70 to 200 guests, budgets tend to land between about €1,200 and €2,500 per person, everything included.
- The venue. The biggest single cost. Exclusive use of a private villa for a wedding weekend is often in the range of €18,000 to €55,000, while buying out a grand hotel or a historic estate starts at around €200,000.
- Food and wine. Roughly €180 to €250 per guest for high-quality catering, and €250 to €450 at the luxury end.
- What people forget. Boats, shuttles, a marquee if the guest list outgrows the indoor rooms, permits, and a contingency fund. Keep at least ten percent aside.

Photography and film are usually a smaller share of the budget than couples expect, and they are the part you keep. We explain how we work, and what shapes the investment, in our investment guide.
If you want to save without it showing, the biggest levers are the date and the guest list. A Friday or a Sunday, late May or late September instead of peak June, and a number of guests that fits inside the villa without a marquee all make a real difference. Cutting the photographer is not where I'd start, but of course I would say that.
The most prestigious villas on Lake Como
There are dozens of beautiful venues on the lake. These are the ones couples ask me about most, each with a very different character.
Villa Erba, Cernobbio. Built at the turn of the twentieth century for Luigi Erba, it's where his grandson Luchino Visconti spent his summers as a boy. Marble halls, Murano chandeliers, a grand staircase and a lawn right on the water. Ceremony, aperitivo, dinner and party can all happen here, a few minutes from Como, which makes life easy for guests. See Renee & Tino's wedding at Villa Erba.

Villa d'Este, Cernobbio. Probably the most famous name on the lake. Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio had it built in the sixteenth century, and it has been a grand hotel since 1873. A wedding here is a hotel wedding in the most classic sense: impeccable service, a historic park and your guests sleeping under the same roof. Celebrations are usually built around booking rooms for the guests, so ask about the conditions early.
Villa del Balbianello, Lenno. The villa on the wooded point of Lavedo, seen in Casino Royale and Star Wars. It belongs to FAI, the Italian National Trust, and runs more like a museum than a venue: ceremonies and receptions are possible, but with timed slots, strict rules and few seated guests. Everyone arrives by boat or on foot from Lenno. Perfect for an intimate ceremony you'll never forget.
Villa Balbiano, Ossuccio. A private sixteenth-century estate on the western shore, also built for Cardinal Gallio, and Aldo Gucci's home in the film House of Gucci. Frescoed rooms, a long lawn on the water and the feeling of a private house. It's rented exclusively, and larger parties usually dine under a marquee on the lawn.
Villa Sola Cabiati, Tremezzo. A historic villa once owned by the Serbelloni family, with formal gardens down to the water. It's rented only in its entirety, through the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, which makes it one of the most private choices on the lake.
Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Bellagio. A historic grand hotel at the tip of Bellagio, where the three branches of the lake meet. Ballrooms, terraces on the water and the most central position on the lake, ideal if you want everyone in one place.
Villa Pizzo, Cernobbio. Gardens that run along the shore, a stone terrace on the water for the ceremony and interiors full of character. We filmed Dan & Christian's wedding at Villa Pizzo, and it remains one of our favorite places on the lake.

Villa Cipressi, Varenna. On the eastern shore, a hotel with terraced gardens stepping down to the lake. A lovely choice for a smaller, more relaxed celebration in one of the prettiest villages on Lake Como.
How to choose
If your guests' comfort comes first, a grand hotel like Villa d'Este or Villa Serbelloni keeps everyone under one roof. If you dream of a private home, look at Villa Balbiano or Villa Sola Cabiati. For an intimate ceremony in front of one of the most famous views in Italy, Balbianello. And if you want ceremony, dinner and party in the same historic villa, a short ride from Como, Villa Erba is hard to beat.

Every one of these villas photographs differently, at different hours of the day.
